What happened to LearnVest?

LearnVest was acquired by Northwestern Mutual in 2015, in a deal announced in March and closed that May. It was one of the biggest fintech acquisitions of the decade — reported at around $375 million, though the exact price was never officially disclosed. At the time, the company had roughly 1.5 million users.

Following the acquisition, founder Alexa von Tobel stayed on and became Northwestern Mutual's first-ever Chief Digital Officer, later serving as Chief Innovation Officer overseeing the company's venture arm. LearnVest's standalone financial-planning service was wound down in 2018, and its technology was folded into Northwestern Mutual's own platform.

So while the LearnVest brand no longer operates as a separate service, its impact didn't disappear — it helped modernize how a major financial institution serves its customers. And Alexa carried the mission forward, founding the venture firm Inspired Capital in 2019 and continuing to teach her financial system through her books and courses.

In short: LearnVest succeeded, got acquired, and its founder kept building.
