Who founded LearnVest?
Alexa von Tobel founded LearnVest in 2008. A Certified Financial Planner and Harvard graduate, she dropped out of Harvard Business School to build it, with a clear goal: to make real financial planning — the kind that used to be reserved for the wealthy — accessible and affordable to everyone.
LearnVest paired everyday people with Certified Financial Planners and gave them simple technology to see all their money in one place. The idea struck a chord. The company raised roughly $75 million in venture capital from investors including Accel Partners and American Express, and grew to about 1.5 million users.
In 2015, LearnVest was acquired by Northwestern Mutual in one of the biggest fintech acquisitions of its time. Alexa stayed on in senior leadership before going on to found the venture firm Inspired Capital in 2019.
Today, the spirit of LearnVest lives on in Alexa's books and courses, which carry the same mission she started with: helping people take control of their money and feel fearless doing it.
